This is what patients can expect from a bunion removal

Thinking of having an onion removed?

Right here in San Antonio, there are onion academy trials to evaluate new painkillers, and you might be able to be a part of it.

Dr. Chad Howze, sub-investigator; DPM/podiatrist, explains how people with bunions can potentially have their bunions removed — and earn compensation for their participation.

1. What is an onion?

According to Evolution Research Group, a bunion is a painful bony bump that develops at the base of the big toe. This bony bump is often caused by narrow, tight-fitting shoes. Bunions can be annoying, causing daily pain and leading to serious conditions like arthritis.

To take with: If you notice a large, painful bump forming on the joint at the base of your big toe, it’s a sign you need to see your podiatrist.

2. What can patients expect from a bunionectomy?

Adults with bunions requiring bunion removal surgery may be eligible for future research studies. A bunionectomy is surgery to remove a bunion and cut the bone and require screw fixation.

“A patient should stay with us between three and five days,” Howze said. “The patient participates in our research, which involves testing experimental drugs to determine their effectiveness for pain control after surgery.”

To take with: Patients who are approved for the clinical trial should be evaluated for three to five days.

3. What is the benefit for the patient of participating in a clinical trial?

“Patients can have their surgery performed by a board-certified surgeon, and patients can get involved and help us bring new painkillers to the public that can be effective,” Howze said.

To take with: Eligible individuals can see free medical personnel, access bunion removal surgery at no cost, and receive compensation for time and travel.

4. Who is eligible for the clinical trial?

Qualified participants include adults 18 and older and those with a bunion who are willing to undergo bunion removal surgery, although additional criteria may apply, Evolution Research Group explained.

To take with: Entrants must be 18 or older and have an onion to be considered as a candidate. In addition, applicants must complete a quick online test survey to start the application process.
