May 15, 2022 ― Doha: Iman (39) receives chemotherapy at the Palestine-Turkey Friendship Hospital in southern Gaza City as part of a joint Red Crescent Society project of Qatar (QRCS) and the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) to provide medicine to cancer patients in Gaza.

With a strong determination, she continues to spread a spirit of resilience in the face of the disease to other patients. Her peers and medical staff admire Iman’s energetic attitude and firm belief in her ability to recover from an illness that has plagued her for more than five years now.

“You can imagine how my life felt like it had come to a halt once I found out I had breast cancer,” Iman said, describing her experience with breast cancer. “A moment later, I decided to fight to overcome the disease. I am a math teacher and I have family responsibilities. I cannot let my children down now”.

She believes that cancer patients should continue to receive all treatments and endure pain, in order to survive and return to normal life.

Dr. Akram Nassar, head of the QRCS office in Gaza, said they would continue to provide drugs to cancer patients in Gaza. Under the project, a total of 19 types of chemotherapeutic, hormonal and analgesic drugs are procured.

Against the backdrop of difficult humanitarian and health conditions in Gaza, he added, the project would help alleviate the suffering of 8,644 patients, ease the burden on health service providers in hospitals and reduce referrals. treatment abroad.

The $800,000 project is co-funded by QRCS and KRCS (via Kuwait Finance House [KFH]) — $300,000 and $500,000 respectively.

Dr. Zikri Abu Qamar, Deputy Director General of Pharmacy at the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Gaza, commended the humanitarian interventions of the QRCS to support the health sector, especially with a persistent shortage of medical supplies for cancer. .

“Last year the shortage was 53%,” he revealed. “As a result, therapy courses have been discontinued for many patients.
