New Hannover School Board Approves Student Voice Policy, Provides Bus Transportation Updates

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The New Hanover County School Board has approved a policy to give students a stronger voice at future board meetings.

The Student Voice Policy gives students a tangible structure to voice their concerns and ideas to decision makers who shape school policies. Five students were selected from county high schools for the student voice committee, after submitting nominations. One of the main goals is for students from different backgrounds to express how rules and policies may affect them differently.

“It’s so amazing, so much time and energy has gone into creating this policy, creating the group and seeing the change,” said Student Voice member Preston Hardgrove. “And seeing all the work that we’ve done actually has something coming out of it, it’s just so awesome to see”

The Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion would lead the program, convening a quarterly Student Advisory Council with the Superintendent and students from all area high schools and colleges. All types of boards and committees are also required to provide the opportunity for at least one high school student to be represented and vote.

Student engagement teams comprised of middle and high school students will work to organize efforts and communication across the district.

Bus Transportation Update

The school board received an update from Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Planning, Eddie Anderson. Attached to the agenda is a chart of arrival times from Holly Shelter Middle School AM, which shows multiple times in red from September 19-21 and completely green hours from September 27-29.

Novant Health Nursing Program

School leaders reviewed student nursing programs with Novant Health as the site of clinical educational experiences for students and decided that no further action was needed.

In the program, the health sciences teacher supervises students as they learn the nursing aide competencies defined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The training is part of the Fundamentals and Internships in Nursing course. Students begin by completing 30 clinical hours at nursing facilities and then, upon completion of competency checks, attend Novant Health NHRMC clinics.

In accordance with Eugene Ashley High School’s agreement with Trinity Grove Health Care Facility, nursing and personal care skills include taking and recording vital signs, recording height and weight, grooming, bathing and skin care.
